Understanding Lactation Coverage
“Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), new or “ungrandfathered” health insurance plans must cover breastfeeding supports and supplies as a preventive benefit without imposing cost-sharing, such as deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance.
Here are some answers to questions that you might have about the breastfeeding benefit
Prenatal consultation (virtual or in-person)
The prenatal consultation will help you become informed about your rights, debunk myths, and understand what’s needed to establish and maintain your supply in the first two weeks. This consult provides you with one on one support to ask questions and receive a personalized aftercare plan. This consult is suggested to occur between 32-36 weeks and can be beneficial for a rookie or veteran parent. We will accommodate and encourage you to reach out to us for support or questions at any stage of pregnancy.

Initial consultation
(virtual or in-person)
The first few weeks of your baby’s life are essential to establish a milk supply, identifying feeding routines and habits, and bonding with your baby. An initial consultation can provide families with emotional support, education, and peace of mind. An initial consultation may identify potential barriers early to support increased duration and exclusivity with breastfeeding if that is your goal. The initial consultation includes gathering a complete health history, weighted feeding (in- person only), breast assessment, breast pump/supplies tutorial, and an aftercare plan. An initial consultation may occur within the first 4-10 days following the baby’s birth.
Follow up consultation
(virtual or in-person)
Please note a follow-up consultation can only be scheduled if you have purchased one of our packages or completed an initial consultation with Thriving Lineage. Please email questions relevant to your care when scheduling a follow-up consultation.
In the follow-up consultation, we will review and discuss the previous feeding plan to identify what’s working and potential challenges. You will learn new skills and evidence-based information to stay informed as your baby grows and develops. All follow-up consultations will be scheduled at least seven days between the previous visits to ensure time for the family to implement and respond to the previous plan developed.

Weighted feed assessment
(in-person only)
Do you feel confident about your breastfeeding experience but looking for reassurance that your baby is getting enough? A weighted feed may be beneficial for you and your baby. The goal of a weighted feed is to determine how much breastmilk your baby takes during one breastfeeding session. We will help you understand the results and provide an aftercare plan tailored to the baby’s development.
Breast pump consultation
(in-person only)
This consultation provides a tutorial on the proper use of your pump and the fitting of flanges. We will review the specifics of your pump to develop a personalized plan to fit your lifestyle and pumping goals.

Returning to work or school
(virtual or in-person)
It can be an experience full of big emotions when families return to work or school. Developing a plan and routine is essential to maintaining your supply and creating healthy habits. This consultation may be beneficial for parents working remotely and balancing caring for their child in the home.
Child care consultation
$75 -(virtual only)
Have you found yourself frustrated or overwhelmed searching for a childcare provider? Need help to identify a childcare provider not rooted in fear or scarcity? We understand the importance of finding a childcare setting that match your family’s needs and parenting style. The planning process starts before you enter the childcare center for a tour. We can discuss the various early childhood education settings, partnering with your childcare provider, and more to support your child’s development and ease your mind at drop-off. This consultation includes a written personalized plan.
